Cloud Cost Optimization Hero Image

I can build it, run it, and keep improving it.

Client-owned does not mean client-operated. I can remain responsible for the AWS infrastructure and application after launch: monitoring, incidents within defined coverage, maintenance, upgrades, cost and reliability work, vendor integrations, and the next features on the roadmap. You keep control of the system while delegating the work to the engineer who already knows it.

Keep one accountable engineer on the platform after launch for AWS operations, application maintenance, incidents within defined coverage, reliability, cost control, and continued delivery.

Who needs an ongoing AWS and application engineer

Who this is for

  • Owner-led businesses that want the engineer who built the platform to keep operating, maintaining, and extending it after launch.
  • Businesses that want client-owned AWS software without hiring an internal infrastructure and application operations team.
  • Existing engineering teams that want the original architect accountable for AWS, reliability, incidents, integrations, and the highest-risk changes.
  • Companies with an existing AWS application that needs a new operator after an architecture and operating baseline.
  • Platforms with a continuous roadmap where maintenance, reliability, and new delivery need to be planned together.
  • AWS-native businesses that need hands-on operation across multi-account design, IAM, OIDC-based CI, Terraform, observability, databases, queues, and application code.

Who this is NOT for

  • Hourly staff augmentation where tasks are assigned without responsibility for the production result.
  • Organizations looking only for advisory meetings or slide decks without hands-on implementation and operating accountability.
  • Teams that need a full-time people manager, recruiter, engineering executive, or organizational change leader.
  • Systems requiring 24/7 staffed coverage, follow-the-sun incident response, or multiple simultaneous engineering workstreams.

Where this engagement starts

Client-owned software does not have to become your operating burden

Owning a custom platform should not force a $5M to $50M business to build an internal AWS and application operations function. The infrastructure still needs monitoring. Dependencies still need updates. Incidents still need an owner. Integrations change. The business still needs new features after launch. Those are real operating responsibilities, and I can keep them instead of transferring them to the client.

The operating model should be explicit before production. I can remain the primary technical operator, work beside an internal engineer, or coordinate with another agency. In every version, the client keeps control of the AWS accounts, repositories, data, billing, and vendor relationships. Ownership answers who controls the system. The monthly engagement answers who does the work.

The approach

How ongoing platform engineering works

One accountable engineer for the production lifecycle: AWS and application operations, maintenance, incident response within defined coverage, reliability, cost control, vendor integrations, architecture decisions, and continued feature delivery.

  1. 01

    Operating baseline

Review the production application, AWS infrastructure, deployment workflow, observability, backup posture, dependencies, vendor integrations, current incidents, and roadmap. Establish what is healthy, what is fragile, and what needs immediate attention.

  2. 02

    Responsibility and coverage

Write down who handles alerts, incidents, deploys, maintenance, vendor coordination, and roadmap delivery. Define coverage windows, severity levels, response targets, escalation paths, and the monthly capacity reserved for planned engineering.

  3. 03

    Reliability and maintenance

Run the maintenance work that keeps a production platform healthy: dependency and runtime upgrades, security patches, restore tests, alarm tuning, cost review, performance work, and remediation of recurring failure modes.

  4. 04

    Continued delivery

Use reserved capacity to ship the next features, integrations, workflow improvements, and architecture changes. Larger bodies of work become separately scoped builds so maintenance and incident capacity do not silently disappear.

  5. 05

    Operating record

Keep the runbooks, Architecture Decision Records, dependency inventory, incident history, and operating roadmap current. Report shipped work, reliability risk, AWS cost, incidents, and next priorities in writing every month.

What ongoing AWS and application operation includes

  • Written operating plan naming the AWS and application surfaces in scope, coverage windows, severity levels, response targets, escalation, approvals, and reserved monthly capacity.
  • Monitoring and incident triage across application health, ECS or Lambda workloads, queues, databases, deployments, integrations, alarms, logs, and cost signals within the contracted coverage.
  • Routine maintenance: security patches, dependency and runtime upgrades, certificate and secret rotation, backup checks, restore tests, and recurring failure remediation.
  • AWS reliability and cost work: IAM and account posture, Terraform changes, observability tuning, performance improvements, capacity decisions, and monthly cost review.
  • Direct feature and integration delivery within reserved monthly capacity, with larger roadmap bodies scoped separately so operating coverage remains intact.
  • Vendor and architecture decisions tied to the production roadmap, recorded as Architecture Decision Records when the choice has lasting operational consequences.
  • Monthly operating report covering shipped work, incidents, reliability risks, maintenance status, AWS cost, blocked decisions, and next priorities.
  • Runbooks, dependency inventory, incident history, recovery procedures, and deployment documentation kept current as part of the work, not saved for a future handoff.

FAQ

Ongoing platform engineering questions

  • An agency usually spreads architecture, delivery, and operations across different people. That can be useful when the work needs a bench. It also creates handoffs and makes it harder to identify who owns the production result.

Ongoing Platform Engineering is a narrower offer. I remain directly accountable for the AWS infrastructure and application I operate. I investigate incidents, maintain the platform, ship changes, make architecture and vendor decisions, and report the work in writing. There is no claim that I am managing your people or acting as a broad organizational executive.

  • I write and ship the code. The monthly scope includes hands-on work across Terraform, AWS, Next.js, Payload CMS, PostgreSQL, integrations, deployment pipelines, observability, and the operating surfaces staff use.

At Fine's Gallery, I designed and built the platform and continue to operate, maintain, and extend it after cutover. That includes infrastructure, application code, integrations, production investigation, and new roadmap work. Architecture is part of the job because the same person is accountable for what happens when the decision reaches production.

  • Yes. I can remain the primary technical operator, or work beside an internal engineer or agency. You do not need to assemble an AWS and application team just to own the platform. If other engineers are involved, the statement of work makes incident, deploy, maintenance, review, and roadmap responsibilities explicit.

The rule is simple: no duplicated responsibility and no gaps. One named person owns each operating surface, and the client can see the division in writing before the engagement starts.

  • $10K per month, with a 3-month minimum and monthly billing in advance. The statement of work defines reserved engineering capacity, coverage windows, severity levels, response targets, included operating work, and the boundaries around larger feature builds.

If you already have a stable platform, the engagement can begin with an operating baseline. If the system first needs a major rebuild or migration, start with a $15K Platform Architecture Sprint and scope the build separately. Large new modules do not consume the maintenance and incident capacity by surprise; they become fixed-scope Platform Builds.

  • Naples, Florida. Conti Digital LLC is a US entity. Engagements are remote-first, with on-site work for kickoff or critical-path moments when it is the best use of time. The anchor client is a luxury retailer in Bonita Springs; engagements have also reached as far as a national-scale regulated registry.

  • I can operate the AWS organization and accounts, Terraform, CI/CD, application runtime, databases, queues, scheduled jobs, observability, backups, secrets, third-party integrations, and the application code itself. The exact surface depends on the platform and the access the client approves.

The operating plan names what I monitor, what alerts me, what I can change without additional approval, what requires owner approval, and what response targets apply. Client-owned credentials and accounts let me do the work without making the client dependent on infrastructure I control.

Anchor reference: Fine's Gallery, a luxury marble and stonework retailer in Bonita Springs, where I continue to operate, maintain, and extend the custom AWS commerce platform after cutover.

Recent confidential reference (architecture-only, client name protected): a national-scale energy-sector certificate registry where I served as Lead Architect for six months, designing the authoritative double-entry ledger and sovereign AWS target architecture.

  • No. This is solo, hands-on platform operation, not a staffed managed-service provider or network operations center. Coverage windows, severity levels, response targets, escalation, and planned capacity are written into the statement of work. If the system requires round-the-clock staffed coverage or multiple simultaneous workstreams, I will say that directly and help define the provider profile you need.

  • Fine's Gallery Platform Modernization

Fine's Gallery began with a catalog-only website: customers could browse thousands of high-value products, but they could not complete payment online. Sales happened through staff, phone, email, showroom conversations, FileMaker, and disconnected vendor tools. I built the first transactional commerce and operations platform inside the client's own AWS Organization. It now supports millions in annual revenue, including six-figure monthly commerce volume; migrated 28,062 invoices and more than 20 years of operating history without loss or duplicate invoice numbers; and cut over with zero downtime. I continue to operate, maintain, and extend the AWS infrastructure and application after launch.

Lead architect on a regulated energy-sector certificate registry. Designed and built the replacement for a managed SaaS ledger platform with a client-owned PostgreSQL system. Five database-owned write functions hold the entire authoritative mutation surface. Append-only canonical ledger with a blockchain-style UTXO model and double-entry credit/debit postings, validated by a comprehensive integration test suite against real PostgreSQL.
